Hip Surgeon Nowra – Understanding healthy hips
The hip is essentially a ‘ball and socket’ joint. It is one of the biggest joints in the body, and connects the femur (thigh bone) with the pelvis. The hip is known as a ball and socket joint as the ball-shaped knob on the end of the thigh bone fits into a socket in the hip bone, known as the acetabulum.
In healthy hips, the bony surfaces within the hip joint are covered with a smooth, shiny substance known as articular cartilage. This cartilage keeps the joint slippery and allows the bones to glide together smoothly.
Around the outside of the hip joint is a layer of soft tissue, and outside of this are large tendons, ligaments and muscles. The joint capsule holds everything in place and prevents dislocation.
